Interesting in learning how to make a successful IEEE Day event? Here are some tips and tricks from the ENIS Student Branch IEEE Day 2019 event in Tunisia.

What is IEEE Day?

IEEE Day is the annual celebration that marks the first time in history when engineers worldwide and IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas since 1884. One of IEEE Day’s core objectives is to show the ways many IEEE members in different communities come together to collaborate on ideas that leverage technology for a better tomorrow. Unquestionably, it is a day to celebrate IEEE members!

During the IEEE Day event at ENIS (National School of Engineers of Sfax) Student Branch in Tunisia, the celebrations were one of a kind. The following are lessons that we learned from the IEEE Day celebrations at ENIS SB.

1. Add colour to your event

The hall where the celebration was held was painted all blue. The floating balloons gave the room lots of vibrance and life making you look in awe. The t-shirts were also blue in colour to add to the colour. Similarly, the promotional materials for the celebration matched closely with the rest of the decorations and attendee attires. Additonally, the attendees received branded giveaways in the form of notebooks, pens and carrier bags.

2. Invite a renowned speaker

The speaker of the day was Sahar Slimi. She is the Professional Activities Coordinator at IEEE Tunisia Section. She introduced IEEE Day and gave a dsecription of the expected activities. This message was essential for the new members so as to enable them lead the celebrations in the consequent years. I believe that the new members ought to assume the mantle of leadership from then on. Given these points, Sahar encouraged the students to take advantage of the day’s activities to gain lessons they will use in their future events.

3. Hold a challenge and bring it to life.

The member attendees split into two groups and took up the challenge to brainstorm the ideas that would bring about a succesful event management plan. They divided themselves into the required committees and allocated themselves the different roles needed to oversee the smooth exectution of the event. The groups then had their selected representatives present their ideas before the panel of judges. All things considered, after careful review and assessment of both presentations, the winning group was selected and congratulated.

4. Visit cultural sites.

The Medina of Sfax is the historical site in the city of Sfax. It is considered one of the rare North

African cities to keep its original weft even with the take over of modern structures. It is one of the few Arab-Muslim towns to retain a conservative planning in the whole Mediterranean Basin. To summarize the IEEE Day from the institute, the members visited the El Kamour, one of the most ancient and famous traditional cafés in the medina.

5. Have Fun and Eat Cake!

The moon was shining bright. What a great time to be out by the Great Mosque of Sfax. In groups of two, the attendees gathered to light flying lanterns. The members then released the lanterns into the sky after making a silent prayer wish. Later the attendees took different photo sessions by the great scenery. Lastly, the cake cutting session took place and every member attendee got to have a taste of the sweetness.
