The College of Engineering and Information Technology  – CEIT  at Al Ain University of Science and Technology –Al Ain Campus; in conjunction with the IEEE UAE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society – MTT-S,  Instrumentation and Measurement Society – IM-S Joint Chapter; and the IEEE Al Ain University Student Branch have organized a technical seminar entitled “The engineering of the Human Joint – Advances in Orthopedics Research and Computer Navigation”. It was presented by Dr Farid Amirouche, University of Illinois at Chicago – USA.

The Speaker

Dr Farid Amirouche is a Professor (Full) and Director Orthopedic Research, Professor of Mechanical and Bioengineering, Director of Biomechanics Research laboratory in University of Illinois at Chicago – UIC – USA. He has 264 researches.

Attendees

The seminar was attended by Professor Abdulhafeed Belarabi –AAU Vice President-  Dr. Nazih Khaddaj Mallat – Dean of CEIT , Academic staff, researchers and students from different AAU Colleges.

The Technology

Dr. Amirouche talked about the total hip replacement – THR as one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures to improve the mobility and relieve pain at the hip in patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the hip.

According to Dr. Amirouche, approximately 10% of patients with THRs have complications 5 to 10 years after the procedure and often require revision arthroplasty. Likewise, he has mentioned that the total knee arthroplasty otherwise known as total knee replacement is one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures in the world.

Besides, the presentation highlighted the laboratory research efforts to advance the understanding of the human joint using nanotechnology, imaging and biosensors to design better implants.

At the End

At the end of the seminar, Prof. Belarabi and Dr. Khaddaj Mallat honored Dr. Amirouche for his special efforts and the informative seminar he has delivered.
